Health-as-a-Right Versus Health-as-a-Business America needs a new and compelling vision if it is to continue its leadership in medical innovation—and biopharma must help shape that vision. The industry must confront the dynamic tension between health as a right and health as a business. And it must change perceptions by demonstrating that innovation, investment, and patient value can be mutually reinforcing. Without shifting that narrative, we risk continuing to lose ground in both public opinion and the legislative debate. Healthcare can be accessible, scalable and incentivized if we can achieve this balance.

Despite the Headwinds Research and Innovation is Still Happening This sector is all about developing and bringing new treatments to patients in need. Teams put everything on the line in the hope that an asset will succeed in clinical trials and receive approval. But, in the US, where we pay the highest per capita cost for healthcare yet receive the lowest benefit of all the OECD counties, access to healthcare is not at all guaranteed for a variety of reasons. We need to affect change. And to do that, we need to discuss what change we want.
